Wellington Street, 5 November 2023

As we all know, Sheffield City Council guarantees disappointment, so I don’t expect to encounter the New Jerusalem that they describe or envision. I’m reminded of those front-page features that appeared in the Sheffield Telegraph throughout the 1990s, boldly proclaiming what a fabulous place Sheffield will be in ten years’ time. It didn’t happen then. As anyone who has walked from Moorfoot to Fargate recently will know, it isn’t happening now, and as what has happened in the past is the most reliable indicator of what is likely to happen in the future, I’m not holding my breath for 2024 and beyond.
