Longfield Road, 29 June 2023

Looking right whilst travelling along Northfield Road towards Crookes on foot often brings rewards in the form of appealing light effects, which could lead one to believe that the sun lives somewhere out Bole Hills way. But maybe it just goes there to rest.

The lighting effects are broadly similar looking right after reaching Crookes but they are somewhat less impressive, somehow less expansive.

It was one of these looking right uphill shots that The Guardian chose to illustrate an article about the forthcoming general election in 2024, in which it described Crookes as ‘a leafy suburb.’ Their photograph, featuring the Five Star Fish Bar, did not make Crookes look ‘leafy’ but rather ‘urban’, along the lines of Sharrow, say.

It is true that Crookes is fairly ‘leafy’, thanks in part to the council’s plans for the Western Road Memorial Trees being confounded, but a better summary description of Crookes would be ‘rows of stone-fronted terraces reaching out to open countryside,’ as depicted here.
